Roundup Ready Alfalfa Printable Version

PROTECT FARMERS’ CHOICE TO PLANT BIOTECH CROPS …

… AND HELP BRING BACK ROUNDUP READY ALFALFA

As a member of the American farming community, it is very important that you share your support for Roundup Ready. alfalfa with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). We will have a chance to share our positive experiences with this beneficial technology during a USDA public comment period, expected to open later this summer (2009).

It’s not just about Roundup Ready alfalfa. The organizations that filed the lawsuit against alfalfa want to prevent the approval and release of any new biotech crops.

YOUR ACTION IS NEEDED

It is very important that the USDA receive letters of support from growers and other members of the U.S. agricultural industry that know or want to experience the benefits of crops developed using biotechnology like Roundup Ready alfalfa.

Benefits of biotech alfalfa include:

•       Dependable, cost-effective weed control;

•       Consistent, high-quality, weed-free hay;

•       Improved production efficiencies;

•       Increased dollar value for each ton of hay sold;

•       Improved environmental characteristics; and

•       Improved worker handling safety.

As you know, other biotech crops offer similar advantages, including reduced spraying of pesticides, better weed control and improved productivity and quality.

WHY YOUR SUPPORT IS NEEDED

As you may know, in 2007 a federal district court judge issued a ruling that stopped farmers from planting Roundup Ready. alfalfa until the USDA completes an environmental impact statement (EIS). We anticipate that the EIS may be published in the Federal Register and available for comment via the USDA’s Web site later this summer. To learn more about how we have been working to supply information to complete a thorough EIS as well as recent court rulings, click here (directs to new page – copy below).

Monsanto and Forage Genetics International are asking that you voice your support for Roundup Ready. alfalfa directly, in writing, with the USDA during the public comment period. Again, it is important that the USDA receives letters of support from farmers and other members of the U.S. agricultural industry — some of whom may have first-hand experience with the benefits of biotech crops like Roundup Ready alfalfa.

Help us work to get this beneficial technology deregulated and protect U.S. farmers’ right to choose to plant Roundup Ready alfalfa.
